I had a glimpse of the future when the African Commons Project held its first Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 17 April 2007.
Perhaps its is better to say glimpses of the future.
One glimpse was due to the generosity of the Shuttleworth Foundation. We held the meeting at the Foundation’s offices in Durbanville. Our hosts provided us with technology to talk to those who couldn’t be physically in the room.
That’s the first time I have heard of a South African non-profit company meeting taking place virtually. In one sense that remote participation in a company meeting is not so new, people have been doing participating in company meetings remotely via proxies, and mailed in votes, for centuries.
However to make use of ICT’s for immediate participation is new. Rest assured though that it is perfectly legitimate in terms of South African law.
Another glimpse of the future is the projects which the African Commons project is initiating this year. I will be blogging about some of these exciting projects right here over the next few months.
